What has changed, and what it means for you

You may have seen reports that the Government has decided to ban bituminous house coal in England. From February 2023, coal merchants are no longer permitted to supply bituminous house coal in any format. We understand this news may have caused some concern for customers who have relied on it for years.

The good news is that this does not mean the end of solid fuel. Far from it.

The short version: Bituminous house coal has been replaced by smokeless fuels, which we are fully stocked to supply. If you have a solid fuel boiler, anthracite supplies remain available. We can advise on the right alternative for your appliance.

Why the alternatives are worth knowing about

Coal merchants have plentiful supplies of manufactured solid fuels available as very good alternatives to bituminous house coal. In many respects, these alternatives perform better than what they replace.

More heat output — Smokeless fuels typically generate more heat per kilogram than standard house coal.

Less ash — Cleaner burning means less mess and less frequent appliance maintenance.

Longer burn time — Smokeless fuels burn for longer, so you use less to achieve the same warmth.

Lower emissions — Better for local air quality and better for your chimney over the long term.

For those with solid fuel boilers, there are still ample supplies of anthracite available. Give us a call and we'll advise on what works best for your particular appliance and circumstances.

We are a Ready to Burn certified supplier and an Approved Coal Merchant, so you can be confident that everything we supply meets current standards.
